Analysis
Fences by August Wilson illustrated the lifestyle of African Americans back in the 1950s. The play focused on the Maxson family. The point of view through out the play is through the eyes of Troy Maxson as viewed by the audience. He is the lead in the drama, and all plots revolve around his life and his decisions, some good and others not so good. These point of view gives the audience an understanding of life as an African American, both male and female.
Wilson used symbols in his play to help audience connect events occurring with real world situation to help readers better understand the play. One of the symbol which is obvious from the title itself and from reading the text is "Fences", The term Fences came in deeper understanding in Act II scene One when Bono (Troys best friend) said some people build fences to keep people out.. and other people build fences to keep people in. Rose wants to hold on to you all. She loves you. Bono indicates that Troy pushes Rose away by cheating on her.Troy's lack of commitment to finishing the fence parallels his lack of commitment in his marriage.
The symbol of the fence and the metaphors of baseball used throughout this drama, connect everything back to the sense that Troy Maxson was unhappy with his life, and felt as if he were a failure. The failure was taken out on those he felt a responsibility to, such as Rose, and Cory. He felt no real responsibility to Lyons, hence there relationship was better. Troy was jealous of Cory and reminded of his failures by Rose. Wilson used the fence and baseball to tell this story. It was not just a story of a life perceived as a failure, but a look into the mind and thoughts of an African American man of the 1950s. Chanin Storm Analysis on August Wilson's Fences. Hubpages.com. The Man With A Divided Heart
By Letitia Hodge
When you fall in love with a man, who has a divided heart,
Your relationship is doomed right from the start.
As he tries to convince you that things are better than they seem,
He leads you down a path of empty promises and unfulfilled dreams.
Hot and steamy lovemaking filled with passionate cries are followed by
Unanswered calls, disappearing acts and insulting lies.
His smooth and crafty words resonate in your head, as you lie awake at
night in a cold and empty bed.
Being shuffled about like a deck of cards and feeling like a fool, is the price you
pay for being in love with a man who’s totally confused.
You deserve to be loved by a God-fearing man who is stable and sincere, not a man
who has become an expert at saying things every woman wants to hear.
Get out of this mess, Girlfriend! God has better plans for you.
He wants to rebuild your inner spirit and make it better than new.
You are a precious Child of God. You are beautiful and way too smart,
to stay in a damaging relationship with a man who has a divided heart
